Types of bodysuits for women
Bodysuits made for women often fall under one of three different functions. Everyday wear, foundation shape wear, and undergarments.
The everyday wear bodysuit is meant to be worn as a shirt, and its design reflects this function. Everyday wear bodysuits are designed to look like blouses, t-shirts, or other tops. The key difference is that the material is made to be form fitting and sleek, which creates a smooth, slim torso line. This type of everyday bodysuit is particular popular when worn with casual pants, such as jean pants, because they will always appear professional and tucked under. A common material used in everyday wear bodysuits is spandex or a spandex blend. Everyday wear bodysuits often come in black, but they are also made in a range of colors, such as white, cream, red, burgundy, blue, etc. Typically, everyday wear bodysuits do not come in prints or with special designs outside of simple embroidery or logo screen printing. The style of an everyday wear bodysuit is usually quite simple, without buttons, ties, zippers or other adornments. Like any other simple shirt design, everyday wear bodysuits can have collars—turtleneck collars and V collars are the most popular.
However, not all bodysuits are designed to be seen.
The foundation shape wear bodysuit is the most popular type of bodysuit worn by women today. Shape wear is a garment which is intended to slim down a woman’s body – particular her sides, stomach, buttocks and upper thighs – to give the appearance of a slimmer and more smooth bodyline. They are considered “foundation” wear because they form the “foundation” of an ensemble. Shape wear bodysuits are popular because bodysuits cannot slip and slide on the woman’s body, unlike other forms of shape wear which may function more like pants or shorts. Bodysuits which are meant to be foundation shape wear are often sleeveless, usually with thin straps. They may start above the breast or below the breast, depending on the particular design. Some bodysuits intended for shape wear do have sleeves, however these are meant for formal outfits with long sleeves since ‘peeking’ shape wear is considered inappropriate. Typically, the color of foundation shape wear bodysuits will be black, white, or flesh colored. This is so that the shape wear is properly hidden under just about any type of outfit, even thinner and more sheer ensembles.
In addition to everyday wear and foundation shape wear, bodysuits are also used as lingerie and underwear. Lingerie and underwear are worn either under everyday clothing or as pajamas or “adult” wear at night. Unlike bodysuits made for everyday wear and foundation shape war, lingerie and underwear bodysuits are often made out of cotton, silk , or other soft materials. Some underwear bodysuits are made from a spandex/cotton (or other material) blend to create a somewhat smoother underwear line but in a softer fashion. Bodysuit underwear and lingerie is typically intended to appear elegant, cute, or sexy, and thus is made in more colors and styles than other kinds of bodysuits. For example, a lingerie body suit might have slits in the sides or be made from sheer materials or include lace. Usually, lingerie body suits will be more ‘sexy’ than regular underwear bodysuits. Lingerie and underwear bodysuits also come in a wider variety of colors, such as bright baby blues, soft pinks, striking purples, etc. And unlike the other kinds of bodysuits, these types of bodysuits often feature more decorative adornment, such as lace, bows, and even corset-style ties.
